The National Bank MISAFF16 festival of new South Asian and Middle Eastern cinema opens this year with the brilliant multiple-award-winning film ALIGARH directed by Hansal Mehta and starring Manoj Bajpayee. The director Hansal Mehta will be in attendance along with actor Rajkumar Rao as well as a slew of stars from the Canadian and South Asian film industries.
Co-presented with the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival
Set in a city of Uttar Pradesh and based on true events, the film is about Professor Shrinivas Ramachandra Siras who taught Marathi at Aligarh Muslim University. Following a sting operation conducted by a TV channel which showed him in an embrace with a rickshaw puller at his house inside the campus, Professor Siras was fired from his job and had to face unsurmountable hurdles and humiliation.
The film screening will be followed by Q & A with the actor. Following this event will be the MISAFF16 reception and opening party. The opening party is accessible with the purchase of the opening night film and party ticket or the film festival pass. It is on a first come, first served basis and we have a capacity to keep in mind for our party location.
